SEASONS: the photography
Hans Ole Madsen, photographer
Born in 1955, Hans Ole Madsen began with assignments for international companies such as Bang & Olufsen, Lego and Velux. He now specialises in portraits of artists and their work. He has provided the photography for a number of books, including several award winning titles. His work has also been featured in one-off exhibitions.
Photographing for SEASONS
Over the course of a year, Hans Ole Madsen visited England regularly to capture each season in photographs. Every photo shoot had to be planned like a military operation. People, places, and ‘props’ all had to be ready for the few intensive days of shooting.
Hans took 4000 pictures in all, leaving the author with the near impossible task of selecting 400 for the book.
The unpredictable British weather made it all the more challenging and at times we had to work extremely fast to capture a particular light or avoid a threatening cloud. Also, photographers don’t see weather in the way the rest of us do. When it’s sunny, the light is too strong. If it’s overcast, the light is too dull. If it’s too early/too late/too midday, the light might not offer just the right shadows. But we got there in the end.
